Twenty years of "wish someone had told me that sooner" — NCT prep, warning signs, tyre law, fuel savings and how not to get burned buying a used car. Straight answers, no jargon.
Oil slowly loses its ability to protect the engine — it thins, fills with combustion by-products and stops neutralising acids. Skip one service and you probably won't notice; skip two or three and you're looking at accelerated wear on the turbo, camshaft and bearings that costs hundreds of times more than the service did. A €165 service protects a €5,000+ engine.
Yes — once a month and before any long journey. Park on level ground, wait five minutes with the engine off, pull the dipstick, wipe it, re-insert fully and read. Modern engines can legitimately use up to a litre of oil every 1,500 km, so topping up between services is normal, not a fault. Use the grade printed in your handbook (e.g. 5W-30) — the wrong oil can damage a modern engine.
The timing belt keeps the top and bottom halves of your engine rotating in sync. If it snaps, pistons hit valves and the engine is destroyed in less than a second — typically a €2,500–€4,000+ repair. Most belts are due between 90,000–160,000 km OR 5–7 years, whichever comes first (rubber ages even if the car sits). If you've bought a used car with no proof it was done, budget for it now.
Diesels have a DPF (diesel particulate filter) that traps soot, then burns it off at high exhaust temperatures — which only happen on sustained runs. Short school-run journeys never get hot enough, the filter clogs, the DPF light comes on, and the fix escalates from a forced regeneration (cheap) to a replacement filter (over €1,000). If you mostly drive short hops, give the car a 30–40 minute motorway run every couple of weeks — or consider whether a petrol or hybrid suits your driving better.
Blue smoke means the engine is burning oil — worn valve seals, piston rings or a tired turbo. White smoke that doesn't clear after warm-up can mean coolant entering the engine (head gasket) — get it checked urgently. Black smoke is over-fuelling: air filter, injectors or sensors. Thin white vapour on a cold morning that disappears in a minute is just condensation and completely normal.
A healthy cooling system is sealed — it shouldn't "use" coolant at all. Slow loss usually means a weeping hose joint, radiator or water pump; sudden loss with overheating is an emergency. Never just keep topping up without finding the cause, and never open a hot coolant cap. If you're topping up more than once between services, book it in.
An interim service (from €165 with us) covers engine oil, oil filter and a safety inspection — right every 10,000–12,000 km. A full service (from €210) adds air filter, pollen filter, fuel filter where due, brake fluid check, and a deeper inspection of brakes, suspension and driveline — right every 20,000–24,000 km or annually. Alternating the two keeps most cars healthy for the least money.
Year after year: headlamp alignment, tyre condition and tread depth, brake performance and imbalance, suspension wear, and lighting/electrical faults (a single blown bulb can fail you). Almost all are cheap to catch before the test — a pre-NCT check costs a fraction of the retest fee plus the fuel and time of a second visit.
A week before: check every bulb and wiper, check tyres (tread and pressure, including any visible damage), top up washer fluid, make sure the horn works, remove dashcam/phone mounts blocking the windscreen, clear the boot (the tester needs access to the spare), and give it a decent run so the engine is fully warm for the emissions test. Read the fail sheet carefully: items marked "Fail Dangerous" mean the car shouldn't be driven at all. For ordinary fails you have 30 days to repair and retest without a full re-inspection (retest fee applies unless it's a minor visual item). Bring us the fail sheet — we fix exactly what's listed, nothing you don't need.
A steady amber engine light means "get it checked soon" — the car has logged a fault but is protecting itself. A FLASHING engine light means active misfiring that can destroy the catalytic converter within minutes: slow down, avoid hard acceleration, and stop as soon as it's safe. Either way, the fault code tells us exactly where to look — diagnostics takes minutes with the right equipment.
A light squeal on the first few stops of a damp morning is usually just surface rust and harmless. A constant squeal often means the pad wear indicator is touching the disc — pads are due. GRINDING means the friction material is gone and metal is eating your discs: what would have been a pads-only job is now pads AND discs. Never wait on a grinding noise.
Shaking through the wheel at 100–120 km/h is most often wheel balance — quick and cheap to fix. If it shakes mainly when braking, suspect warped or unevenly worn brake discs. If the whole car wanders or pulls to one side, think alignment or a tyre fault. All three get worse (and chew tyres) the longer you leave them.
A sweet syrupy smell is coolant — check the level and look for pink/green residue; running low can warp a cylinder head. A fuel smell should never be ignored: check the filler cap first, then get it inspected. An acrid electrical burning smell or a hot metallic smell after normal driving means stop and investigate — brakes may be binding or wiring overheating.
Classic signs: the biting point creeping higher up the pedal travel, engine revs rising without the car accelerating (slipping — most obvious in high gears uphill), a judder pulling away, or a squeal when you press the pedal. A slipping clutch only gets worse, and driving on it can take the flywheel with it — turning a big job into a bigger one.
A single clunk over speed bumps or potholes usually points to anti-roll bar drop links or bushings — cheap parts that make expensive-sounding noises. A rhythmic knock that speeds up with the car is more serious (driveshaft or wheel bearing). Either way it's an easy diagnosis on a ramp, and suspension knocks are NCT territory too.
The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread. But braking distances in the wet grow rapidly below 3mm — at 1.6mm in heavy rain, your wet stopping distance can be nearly double what it was on new tyres. We advise budgeting for replacement at 3mm, and it's an automatic NCT fail below 1.6mm. Quick check: insert a 20c coin in the groove — if you can see all of the horse, you're too low.
Yes — always across the same axle. Two tyres with different grip levels on the same axle make the car unpredictable in emergency braking and cornering, especially in the wet. Fit the newest tyres to the REAR axle (even on front-wheel-drive cars): losing rear grip causes a spin, losing front grip causes understeer you can correct.
Typically 40,000–60,000 km, but it varies hugely with driving style and terrain — town driving with constant stops wears pads three times faster than motorway miles. Discs usually last two sets of pads. We measure pad and disc thickness at every service and tell you how many kilometres you realistically have left, so replacement is planned, never an emergency.
Most often: uneven tyre pressures (check first — it's free), then wheel alignment knocked out by a kerb or pothole, then a binding brake caliper dragging on one side. A car that pulls under braking specifically usually has a caliper or hose problem. Alignment issues also scrub tyres bald on one shoulder — the pull is costing you money either way.
Yes — bed them in. For the first 200 km or so, brake gently and progressively where possible and avoid standing hard on them from speed. Proper bedding transfers an even friction layer onto the discs; abusing brand-new pads can glaze them, leaving you with noise and mediocre braking that no amount of driving fixes.
The big five, in order of impact: correct tyre pressures (under-inflated tyres can add 5%+ to consumption), smooth anticipation instead of late braking, removing roof boxes/racks when unused (up to 20% at motorway speed), not idling to "warm up" (modern engines warm fastest being driven gently), and keeping up with servicing — a clogged air filter or old oil measurably increases consumption.
For most ordinary cars, no — they're mapped for standard 95 octane and gain nothing from 99. Two exceptions: high-performance engines that specifically require it (check the fuel flap), and older diesels where a periodic tank of premium diesel's extra detergents can help keep injectors clean. Don't pay premium prices out of habit.
At motorway speeds, yes — aerodynamic drag is the dominant force on your car above ~90 km/h, and a roof box can add 10–20% to consumption. Roof bars alone, even empty, cost you a few percent. The rule: fit them for the trip, take them off after. Same logic for permanently hauling a boot full of junk — every 50 kg costs roughly 1–2%.
Documents first: full service history (stamps AND invoices), NCT history, and a history check for finance/crash/mileage. Then the car: even panel gaps and paint (crash repair), oil condition and level, coolant colour, tyre wear pattern (uneven wear = suspension or alignment issues), every electrical item, and a cold start — listen for rattles in the first ten seconds. Best of all: a professional pre-purchase inspection costs from €80 and can save you thousands. We do them, with a written report.
Compare the odometer against the NCT history (mileage is recorded at every test — check it free on ncts.ie). Cross-check service stamps and old invoices. Then look for wear that doesn't match the miles: a shiny steering wheel, worn pedal rubbers and a sagging driver's seat on a "low mileage" car are red flags. Our own workshop system flags any vehicle whose recorded mileage ever goes backwards.
A fresh NCT means the car met minimum standards on test day — nothing more. It doesn't check the clutch, gearbox, timing belt history, oil condition or a dozen expensive things that fail cars in the real world. It's a good sign, not a guarantee. A pre-purchase inspection looks at the car the way a buyer should, not the way a test lane does.
A dealer sale gives you consumer rights under the Sale of Goods Act — the car must be of merchantable quality, and you have recourse if it isn't. A private sale is caveat emptor: once the money changes hands, problems are yours. Private prices are lower for exactly that reason. If you buy privately, spend some of the saving on a history check and a professional inspection — it's your only protection.
Battery first — it's the number one winter callout, and a battery over 5 years old that struggles on a cold morning is telling you something. Then: coolant antifreeze strength checked (not just level), tyres at 3mm+ for wet grip, wipers that don't smear, washer fluid with proper additive (not washing-up liquid — it freezes and smears), and all lights working for the dark commutes.
Yes — the system loses up to 10% of its refrigerant per year through the seals, which is why aircon gradually gets weaker without ever "breaking". Run it at least once a week year-round (it also demists faster than heat alone) to keep the seals lubricated. A musty smell means bacteria in the evaporator — an antibacterial clean fixes it. Regas every 2–3 years keeps it cold and protects the compressor.
Yes — less than combustion cars, but "maintenance-free" is a myth. EVs still need brake servicing (in fact brakes can seize from LACK of use, because regenerative braking means the discs rarely work hard), tyres (they wear faster from the extra weight and instant torque), suspension, cabin filters, coolant for the battery system, and diagnostic health checks. They still need the NCT too.
Mostly: just drive it — the car manages the battery itself. What helps: avoid leaving the car parked unused for many weeks (a 12V flat is the most common hybrid "failure"), keep the battery cooling vents (often under a rear seat) clear of bags and dog hair, and have hybrid health checked at service. A well-treated Toyota-style hybrid battery routinely outlives the rest of the car.
Usually one of: winter (the engine runs to heat the cabin), a tired 12V or traction battery holding less charge, a clogged battery cooling fan filter, or simply more short journeys. If economy has genuinely dropped, a hybrid system health check reads the battery's real capacity and tells you whether it's the battery or just the season.
Cars registered since July 2008 are taxed on CO2 emissions — from around €120 a year for the cleanest bands to well over €2,000 for the highest emitters. Pre-2008 cars are taxed on engine size, which is why a modest old 1.9 can cost more to tax than a newer 2.0 turbo. Check the exact band before buying any used car — it changes the real cost of ownership significantly.
Yes to both. Tyres below 1.6mm carry a fine and penalty points per tyre, and a defective light is an offence too — plus either can void an insurance claim after a crash, which is the truly expensive part. A monthly two-minute walk-around costs nothing.
No — this is one of the most persistent myths in motoring. Under EU block exemption rules, any garage can service your car within warranty as long as the manufacturer's schedule and OEM-quality parts are used. We follow the schedule, use OEM-quality parts, and stamp the book. You keep the warranty and skip the dealer labour rate.
A high-vis vest for every seat (in the cabin, not the boot — you put it on BEFORE getting out), a warning triangle, a phone charger, a torch, a basic first-aid kit, and in winter a blanket and scraper. Add the wheel-lock nut key and know where your towing eye lives — recovery drivers ask for both every single day.
Ideally: don't. Water deeper than the centre of your wheels can be pulled into the engine intake — a hydrolocked engine is usually a write-off, and insurance doesn't always cover driving into visible floodwater. If you must cross shallow water: first gear, steady crawl, high revs, don't stop, and test your brakes gently immediately after. If a diesel or petrol stalls in water, do NOT restart it — tow it out.
Fogging is moisture trapped in the cabin — wet coats, breath, leaking door seals or a blocked pollen filter. Quick fix: aircon ON with heat (it dehumidifies), windscreen vent, rear demister. If one footwell is damp or it fogs constantly, you likely have a water leak or saturated pollen filter — both cheap to sort, and a damp cabin eventually means electrical gremlins and mould.
Book it in — the digital health check tells you exactly where it stands, and nothing is done without your approval.
