The True Cost of Cheap Parts

Every week we see the aftermath of bargain components: repeat failures, damaged systems, and repairs that cost double what doing it right the first time would have. Here's what the price tag doesn't tell you.

"It's the same part, just cheaper" — no, it isn't

Walk into any motor factor or scroll any marketplace and you'll find brake pads for €18 and brake pads for €70 that claim to fit the same car. They bolt on the same. They look the same in the box. So what are you actually paying for?

Materials, testing, and consistency. An OEM quality part is built to the specification the vehicle manufacturer engineered the car around — the friction compound, the steel grade, the filtration medium, the tolerances. A bargain part is built to a price. Something has to give, and it's always something you can't see in the box: the compound, the coating, the quality control, or all three.

That's why our policy at Púca Pitstop is simple and absolute: we fit OEM quality components exclusively. Not because we make more on parts — we often don't — but because we stand over every job that leaves the workshop, and we can't stand over a part built to hit a price point.

The workshop rule of thumb: a cheap part doesn't remove a cost — it moves it. Usually a few months down the road, usually bigger, and occasionally onto the most expensive item on the car: you.

Brake pads: the one that scares us

Brakes are where the cheap-parts economy gets genuinely dangerous. Budget friction compounds routinely show three problems we've seen first-hand:

  • Brake fade. Cheap compounds lose friction as they heat up. On the third or fourth hard stop — coming down a hill, in an emergency — the pedal is suddenly doing a lot less than it was. Quality pads are engineered to keep working at temperature; that's precisely the expensive part.
  • Disc destruction. Overly hard budget compounds chew through discs, turning a €60 saving on pads into a €300 disc replacement at the next visit.
  • Noise and dust. The best-case failure: pads that squeal from day one and coat your alloys in black dust. Annoying rather than dangerous — but you still paid for the privilege twice.

Independent brake tests have measured stopping-distance differences of several car lengths from 100 km/h between quality and bargain pads on the same car. Ask yourself what's parked several car lengths past the point where you needed to stop.

Oil and filters: the slow-motion failure

Nobody's engine blows up the week after a cheap oil change. That's exactly what makes it insidious — the damage is cumulative and invisible until it's catastrophic.

  • Wrong-spec oil may be too thick to reach the top of a modern engine quickly on cold start, or too thin to protect it under load. Modern engines — especially turbocharged ones and those with timing chains — are built around very specific oil standards. "5W-30" on the label is not the whole specification.
  • Cheap oil filters save money on the filtration medium and the bypass valve. A collapsed filter element or a stuck bypass valve sends unfiltered oil — grit and all — straight through your bearings for thousands of kilometres.
  • Cheap air filters either choke the engine (robbing fuel economy) or filter poorly (sandblasting the cylinder bores, and on modern cars, ruining the expensive airflow sensor that sits right behind them).

A timing chain stretched by degraded oil is a four-figure repair. A turbocharger starved by a blocked filter is a four-figure repair. The €15 you saved on the filter and oil doesn't move the needle against either.

Suspension, bearings and electrics: the repeat offenders

These are the parts where the cheap version doesn't fail dangerously — it just fails again. Budget ball joints with soft metal that develop play in a year. Bargain wheel bearings that hum within 20,000 km. No-name sensors that throw intermittent faults the diagnostic computer chases in circles. Each time: the same labour cost, again. The labour to fit a cheap wheel bearing and a quality one is identical — you only ever save on the part, and only if it lasts.

The cheap part is more expensive per kilometre before counting the second labour bill, the collateral damage, or the safety margin. This is the quiet truth of the parts industry: quality is cheaper. It just isn't cheaper today.

Common questions

No — and this is the part worth understanding. Many OEM-quality manufacturers build the exact parts that go into new cars on the production line, then sell the same part in their own box for considerably less than the dealership charges. You get production-line specification without the dealership overhead. That's what we fit.

They can. On newer vehicles, manufacturers can reject warranty claims where a failure traces back to a non-equivalent part or wrong-spec fluid. After an accident, an insurer's engineer inspecting a braking system with substandard components is a conversation you don't want to have. Documented servicing with quality parts protects you in both cases.

Ask one question: "what brand of parts, exactly?" A quote can only be cheaper in three places — the parts, the time spent, or the checks not done. We'll always tell you exactly what we're fitting and why. Compare like with like and the gap usually disappears.
